Like It or Not, These Technology Trends are Here to Stay in the New Year

Posted On: December 28, 2017

Technology Trends in the Year AheadThe end of the year is usually a time when IT departments start to dust off their crystal balls in hopes of glimpsing what the future holds. Technology predictions and resolutions abound as many people take time to both reflect on all that has happened and prepare for what is to come.

2017 has been a year full of disruption, often making it challenging for IT to keep up with the demands of the business while adapting to rapidly changing technology trends. But if there’s anything 2017 has taught us, it’s that 2018’s disruptive technologies will most likely come at us even faster. So, clearly understanding what they must face is the best place to start off a new year. With that in mind, here are 6 trends that aren't going anywhere and IT must face as they head into 2018…

  1. BYOD is here to stay. The iPad and smartphone are everywhere, and there is no turning back. Instead, IT departments need to find a balance that enables consumer technology in the workplace without compromising the organization’s security.
  2. Employees have taken control over the use of technology in the workplace. Employees are accessing software and servers without asking for permission, and Shadow IT is the reality. Control has shifted, and it’s now the role of IT to advise users to make better decisions about third-party apps and services.
  3. MultiCloud is here, and it's complex. Most organizations run some business-critical systems in multiple clouds, but for many, the full potential of MultiCloud has yet to be realized. Issues such as cloud management, compliance, complexity and cost continue to pose major challenges for IT.
  4. You might not know it, but you’ve been hacked. Assume your environment has already been compromised. Headlines aren’t just another organization’s misfortune. There’s a strong likelihood that you could be tomorrow’s news. Plan your security around the assumption you’ve likely been hacked, and focus on detection and response.
  5. Keeping up with the security landscape will only get more daunting. A look at today’s cyber risks informs what needs to happen to protect business data from security vulnerabilities in the years to come. As new threats emerge, understanding how to defend against a changing threat landscape will continue to be a challenge.
  6. Finding talent is hard, and the market is only getting more competitive. The skills gap is widening, and many businesses are struggling to find IT talent with the skills they require. To attract and retain talent, focus on creating a culture where employees want to be engaged and feel like they are making a difference.

It’s okay. You can still face 2018 with confidence.

In all honestly, this list could probably be much longer as the challenges today’s IT team faces are growing daily. But the good news is that we’re here to help carry the load. The support of an experienced IT services partner can help you address these everyday realities and plan for the impact of these challenges in the year ahead…
