Why Organizations Need a Mobile First Mentality

Topic: Multi-Cloud

Processing power and the exponential growth of storage and bandwidth have turned our devices into small personal computers that organizations of all sizes are embracing. But simply giving employees mobile devices or implementing a BYOD policy is not the same as having a mobile-first strategy. Both of those simply mean you allow the use of mobile devices, but neither addresses the true spirit of a mobile-first mentality.

A mobile-first mentality isn't about written documents or lines of code. It’s not about the devices you allow or the apps you deploy. It is an organizational attitude and approach that starts at the top and focuses on user needs that truly empowers employees through their devices.

Design Your Apps to Fit Your Users

Users today are much more sophisticated and expect their apps to have real power combined with ease of use, simplicity, and efficiency. They know that apps can be elegantly designed to streamline a process and eliminate needless distractions, and have shown they are willing and eager to adopt apps that make their lives easier and help them to complete tasks quickly. End users also want to have the same experience with the app no matter what device they have in their hands at any moment in time.

Many IT departments are not prepared to deliver on this expectation. When asked to create sophisticated apps, they hear “complex” and do little more than deliver desktop apps on a small screen. This leads to frustration with the lack of usability, and apps are either ignored or used only reluctantly. As a result, IT feels that users won’t adopt the apps they deliver. Users oblige by refusing to use the apps that don’t meet their purpose. Everybody is unhappy.

In an organization which has adopted a true mobile-first strategy, IT and users work together to design an app with the goal of helping end users solve problems and increase productivity. If IT works with the end user to set objectives and observes users actually doing the task, only then can IT break the requirements down into the essential elements that are truly important. They can then replicate and present the app in the order and the sequence that users need to easily accomplish the task.

No complex menus. No jam-packed screens with drop downs and drill throughs. One task, frictionless and complete, perfectly designed to run on any device.

User Needs Before Business Needs

It seems counterintuitive, but when organizations prioritize the end user’s needs over the business needs, they achieve better results. When an IT team steps away from the complex applications model that has evolved on the desktop and takes the time to understand how users work and what they need from a mobile app, then that company and team can be said to truly have a mobile first strategy.
